Hi all,

This is my first Ferris walk behind, (what a BEAST)!. Excited to get it ready for mowing season. Picked it up recently, not running, but overall it looks to be in very good shape.

After checking the oil, and subsequently draining it and watching water come out, I knew I was in for a bit of work. At first, the engine didn't want to turn over that easily, but, I've pulled the head and fed it a liberal amount of marvel mystery oil and she seems to be coming around and turning over more easily. Cylinder is not scored so fingers crossed. I wasn't able to check compression that easily because of the engine not turning over easily, but will try again.

Bottom line: I'm wondering, since I've got things in a dis-assembly mode already, I'm thinking of just pulling the motor to get it on my bench and separate the lower half and see how the crank etc. is looking. How tough is it to get these motors off; (it's the Kawasaki FC401V 13hp)? Obviously need to take off the 2 belts underneath - do the pulleys need to come off too before I can lift the motor off?

Can't find any DIY videos so hoping someone here can shed a little light. Thank you.

Take off four engine mounting bolts, separate male/female wiring connections, take off ground wire and hot wire to starter, take of throttle/choke cables, remove PTO clutch and pulley, remove fuel line. How old is engine? How many hours on it? I wouldn’t remove engine and open up the case unless it needs work or you have time and curiosity.

Thanks Tiger. No idea how old or hours, I just bought it. Don't disagree on closing point of not removing engine ...but something just don't seem right. Internals do not seem to move freely, at all, so just trying to understand why. Thanks for Info on how to remove.
