Had the mower a three or four years now, bought second hand. former owner swapped original honda for a gxv690 sometime during it's life. This year has been the year things have decided to go south. Mower is older so not unexpected. new issue is I started to have an oil leak, that the last time I tried to use the mower got so bad that it leaked onto the belts and made it unusable. pulled it into the garage trying to figure out what the issue was, and found loose bolts connecting the oil pan/base casting and the crankcase had come loose. further inspection makes me believe I am missing one, so I have a new set on order. it seems pretty clear this is the source of the oil leak, but has anybody over seen a motor where these bolts worked themself loose? I am not a small engine expert, but this one seems very odd to me.

Depends upon who put them in last time
A replacement engine could very well have been a second hand rebuilt engine done by a monkey who thinks he is a mechanic .
