We bought a used Husqvarna YTH24k-48 that starts ok and runs smoothly, but it only stays running if, after starting, you turn the ignition switch back to the reverse/equipment position. (position two, at top). It dies if you try to just put the switch back to regular position (position 3) after starting (position 4). Can anyone tell us what part might need fixing/replacing? Solenoid? Wires? My partner says it's fine to just run it with the switch in that (reverse/equipment) position. Any reason not to?

I would guess you have a bad ignition switch, but don’t see a problem running in the reverse position. You might want to get a new switch, as if one part of the switch goes bad, you don’t want it to shut you down in the middle of the job.

Either you have a bad ignition switch or a bad reverse sensor switch.
The reverse switch is generally on the gearbox.
Find the forward/reverse lever on the box and somewhere near there will be a switch.
Good chance the switch is faulty or one of the wires is pinched and shorting to ground.
The switch itself is a ground switch so a short to ground is hard to find
