Thanks all; It's running now! Turns out Brake Kleen was the magic solvent that cleaned the goo. So I've managed to salvage the original carb. Any suggestions for a fuel additive that might dissolve the 'varnish' inside the emulsion tubes? Thinking maybe Berrymans ChemTool or Mechanic in a bottle. The accursed solenoid was glued shut so I just reinstalled it.

Sure they call it carb cleaner in a spray can.
