I am sure that I can hear the starter spinning. It just seems that it isn't engaging. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check voltage on battery should be high 12 or above.

Voltage is 12.2 and I tried tapping the starter while trying to start. Nothing changed.

Charge or replace battery. You can also jump mower to test.

First thing is stop hitting the starter.

If you can hear the starter spin but not turn the engine then I bet the starter gear is broke or is not moving up to engage the fly wheel.

If there is a small cover over the top of the starter remove it and take a look. If not then remove the whole engine cover.

Clean the starter bendix then lubricate it. Only certain lubricants can be used as many will gum up the bendix and make the problem worse. I use graphite lube in an aerosol can. Works great for me.

I can hear it spinning but not engaging. Do U think that's the issue? Maybe just gummed up?

Could be, Ive seen more than one where that was the problem.

You might have a broken ring gear on the flywheel. I had the exact same thing happen this summer. The starter would spin but it would not engage the broken ring gear and would not start. Pull the cover off the engine and check. It should be pretty obvious if the ring gear is broken. BTW mine has the Kohler Courage engine.
