Hi again everyone, I have a Husky model GTH2554XP with 766 hrs. It has a Kawasaki 25hp engine (FH721V). It will only click while trying to start but if I turn the flywheel by hand until it has no resistance, it will crank but still will not start.
I have changed the known good battery with my other mower with no change. I have taken the starter off and bench tested and the starter moter and solenoid checks ok. The starter is only a couple years old. I don't know if I have one problen or two. When I do get it to turn over, it will crank and crank but never will start. I have set the valve clearances although they werent that far off to begin with.
Any guidance would be appreciated. I don't know what to try next. I have done some research and have read maybe it could be the pinion gear on starter but I probably would have noticed this when I had it off,or maybe decompression release on cam? What should be my next step? Maybe I have missed something simple.

Locate the main fuse, pull it a reseat it a couple of times so it makes good contact. The pins typically corrode and create resistance.

Let me know if that helps. If not, you need a multimeter to test further and more accurately.

Good possibility, based on your description, it is the starter solenoid. Next time engine only clicks, remove protective red rubber boot(s) and cross two main terminals with a screwdriver. I bet it starts.
