Hrn216 intake valve open at DTC.

Rebuilding my HRN216 engine and when I line up dots on timing gear with dots on crankshaft my intake valve is open about a 1/8”. Is this normal or what’s going on?

No. The Honda shop manual I bought said to line 2 dots on timing gear with 2 dots on crankshaft gear.

Hmmm since I haven't brought the GCV170 nor the HRN216 repair manual because I have to ever see one these engines or the HRN216. This is all I had to go by at the time. Downloading the mower's service manual. And sorry for a miss direct.

Maybe they timed the HRN216 differently as those marks are on the parts too.

But I have downloaded the mower's service manual and I see what you are seeing the manual. It is probably the same alignment but the two dots looks heck a lot easier to do.

So lets go back a few steps
Why have you pulled the engine apart ?
What did you replace ?
IF the engine has overheated and the head gone soft then the valve guides could have moved .
Are you sure the pushrods are on the correct followers ?
Normally the timing marks would be at TDC or BDC with both valves closed

Engine pulled apart. Replacing bent crankshaft so engine was not over heated. Pushrods are definitely in the correct followers. I been rebuilding Honda engines for 20 years but the first new design Honda HRN. Inspected all internal engine parts all is great shape. I understand and know about TDC. This doesn’t make sense to me at all. Im beginning to think this is the way this engine is designed. But still with timing dots lined up both valves have to be closed. HELP!!!

I’m thinking I’m going to time according to the picture you sent me and see what happens. I will assemble and spin engine on my workbench and see what happens. For some reason I think this might work. We’ll see. Thanks

I know frustrating at times as the service info is at times out of date different depending the equipment serial number range as OEMs do make changes during the life of the equipment.

The current manual I referring to is for MANA-1000001-9999999 covering the following models. Dated PSV61VR8000E1.2020.06
