HRM21 Carb Cleaning

Hey everyone, I own an HRM21 that's probably close to 20 years old. The thing is a beast and I will never buy anything but a Honda mower again....assuming this one ever dies....which I don't think it will.

Anyway, I did some searching on other people's problems and it sounds like I've got a clogged carb nozzle. The other night I was just walking across the back yard and all of a sudden it just started to bog down. I was able to pull the throttle down and kept it alive, but as soon as I tried to throttle back up it would bog again then die The sticky about cleaning a Honda carb is great, but my only question was I wanted to make sure it's, more or less, the same procedure for my carb? I've got a 16100-ZE5-005. Based on an exploded view of my carb it really looks like it's the same, but I just wanted to double check before I jump into it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

And....this may seem dumb, but my fuel shut off valve does nothing. As in, if the mower's running full on, and I reach down and turn it to off, the mower doesn't shut off. That doesn't sound right, does it? Shouldn't a fuel shut off valve cut the fuel? Or is that maybe not all that suprising?

:welcome:

Yes the carbs pull apart the same.
Most likely some water in the float bowl.

The shut off valve shuts off the fuel supply to the carb but there is near 10 minutes uel before it finally dies.
The tap is simple , just 1 moving part. 1 filter and 1 rubber seal.
The rubber seal used to be a replaceable item.

Well that was underwhelming. Took apart the carb today, got everything cleaned, fired it back up and it did the exact same thing. I'm pretty sure the carb was clean, I saw fluid and light through every jet orifice so I don't think it's the carb pieces.

I'm open for other suggestions? Spark plug (mine is original)? I've tried to get it out before but it seems like I would need a low profile socket as none of my standard sockets fit. Does Honda have something specific?

Any other ideas?

Thanks for any feedback guys.

A new spark plug will not hurt and gapping the plug the plug properly won't hurt either.
When you cleaned out the carb did you also clean out the tap ?
and under the tap on the older models was another filter did you clean that ?

Which of the item numbers at this link are you calling the tap?

Apologies for some of my ignorance on naming convention!

No need to appologise.
the tap is the lever on the far right side of the drawing with no number on it as it is a genuine Honda part only and only available from a Honda dealer.
It is held in by a plate with 2 small screws under that will be a wave spring then the tap iteself.
Not sure if that one is a rubber disc or a tapper.
You most likly have some crud stuck in there or the seal is deteoriating. and blocking the fue line.

Hi,

I sprayed carb cleaner into the fuel shutoff valve and got small black bits (rubber seal?) that flushed out. Flush it from both ends.

Yep and the seal does not like carb cleaner.
Don't know if it is available as a seperate part I have gotton ones for latter models.
If not you will need to get some Buytul Rubber and make one.
Undo those screws and pull the tap apart.
Not meaning to be critical but this is the problem we have with people telling us that they have "cleaned the carb".
There is a better than average chance that tap was your problem in the first place.
