Just picked up a free 7268. Seems to work OK, but it may need some love. Seemed like gas started coming out of the carb after a while, not sure why that is.

Is there anyway to tell what year it was made?:thumbsup:
 
You can figure out the model year if you have the serial number. Go to partstree.com and enter "Lawn-Boy" and the model number and you will see several ranges of serial numbers with the model year corresponding to each range. The 7268 was made from 1978 to 1982.

I've got a 1979 model 7268.

If gas is flowing out of the carb it's probably a problem with the float. Either it's stuck in the down position or the float valve isn't sealing.

You got a nice mower for the price. :cool:

It seemed to run ok, until I stopped it since I almost ran over a bunny nest. Then it didn't want to start up. After that I may have flooded it. Seems to smoke a bit and almost seems a little too quiet.

Like 2 stroke said, you need to clean the carb and install a new needle & seat. It's almost a given on any old lawn boy you plan on using to do this. Sounds like the exhaust ports may be clogged by carbon deposits. You'll need to remove the muffler under the deck to clean them. I highly recommend finding a mechanics handbook from eBay. It will explain in detail everything you need to keep your machine going. Good luck :)

My book is showing that is 1981.Dan

Yes, download the LawnBoy manual it has the specs and disassembly/assembly instructions. It is adviseable to perform a teardown and inspection. They are pretty easy to work on once armed with the correct info, the manual is excellent, because, they have some unique quirks that simply are not obvious to the uninitiated. They will run best when everything is clean, particularly the exhaust ports, and rotating assembly is balanced, and sharp, straight blade with good track. Get everything set according to Hoyle and it will spool up to the correct RPM and will plow through thick turf like nothing else and cut nice.
