I know this is a volatile question since prices vary regionally. I'm still trying to nail (and not have an on-site repairman guess) as to why my mower is still smoking/using up oil. All apparent indicators are either rings and or head gasket. If I take it in to an authorized BS shop (which would hopefully do all the checks and measures I see so many experts on this forum discuss) I'd like to get an idea of what I'm in for cost-wise. I need to know if whoever is working on it is doing the advanced stuff, not just the Billy-Bob approach.


I've looked into replacing short block but whole new engine is practically the same price apparently. Either way it's way past a price I'm comfortable with if it can be repaired.

A authorized Biggs and Stratton repair place will not re-ring it, or rebuild it with oversize piston/rings, they would either shortblock it or repower it.

Have you tried the valve cover test. Remove both valve covers and run on low to medium speed out in the yard.

On a normal engine, the heads will just dribble some oil, if the head gasket is blown, it will spray compression/oil everywhere.

Then go to store and get a head gasket or two for $8 each, and replace.

Anywhere from $100-300 depending on engine size and how many cylinders it has.

Finally was able to try this. Lots of smoke but not much else out of either side.

Did not know this I will have to remember this next time I think a head gasket is bad.

I have rebuilt many engines and as said before, there are many variables. With todays engines, I have found that it is cheaper to use a short block on anything smaller than 15hp. I have reringed B&S engines and have had them bored and installed an oversized piston and rings. Yes, we are an authorized B&S service center. It all depends on what the engine is for and what the customer wants. A good engine rebuilder always mics out the engine before he decides which route to go. The last time I did a complete rebuild, the customer wanted to keep as much as possible authentic and original. Costs in our shop vary from $250 on up.
