Anyone have any tips on how to lock the flywheel on a vanguard electric start engine, please? Need to remove the flywheel to replace the alternator but have tried to lock the flywheel to allow me to undo the retaining nut and failed miserably. Can't seem to lock it enough to undo the nut using standard sockets, think I'm reasonably competent but failed dismally on what I thought would be a simple task!! Help!!!

Remove the spark plug.
Feed some string into the hole. Turn fly wheel till it stops. Or you can get a bolt that threads into the plug hole to hold the piston.

Suggest you use 3/16" - /4" nylon rope as bolt MAY punch hole in piston besides thread fit problem. When using the rope trick, be sure piston is well up on the compression stroke so valves are closed otherwise you may bend a valve.

By the way, I can send you a Service Manual for you engine IF you like. Address below, put in proper format and remind me engine model number and what you want.

Briggs sells a bolt just for doing this.

The bad boy big hex flywheel nut on my Intek requires 100 ft lbs. If you use the search function on this forum you will find a diy holding wrench made from simple materials. The long handle matches a long handle breaker bar so you can obtain the torque needed loosening or tightening.

I use a strap wrench that I got at Home Depot in the plumbing section. Make sure the strap is long enough to fit around the flywheel. Works great on about any engine.
