Honda Smart Drive

I purchased a Honda HRR216YVA yesterday from Home Depot. I mowed the front yesterday with no problems. When I was almost finished with the back yard today, the Smart Drive stopped working. I stopped mowing, and put it back in the garage. The serial # is MZCG8431161. Are there any simple explanations?

Thanks,
Dean

I wish that was the answer to the problem. Authorized dealer said that he had never seen a Smart Drive fail.

Oh WOW! So the dealer has no clue what the problem might be?? :frown:

Since you bought it at Home Depot, probably the simplest fix is to return it and get another one.

Plan B is to take it to a Servicing Honda Dealer and have them inspect and evaluate the problem.

I brought it to a authorized Honda dealer.

I brought it to a authorized Honda dealer.

Hope they can diagnose and repair it quickly. I'll bet it's a cable-related problem, as the transmission itself is quite sturdy and reliable. Keep us posted, and just ask if you have any questions.

I hope that you are right. The mower went in on Monday, but I haven't heard anything back as yet.

Late to this thread, but what did they decide was the issue? My 13 month old HRR2168VKA bought from an authorized dealer had the Smart Drive fail. All they said was to bring it in and they will look at it - in 2 weeks when they can get to it. Sigh...not so happy with my 2nd Honda.

My Smart Drive started slipping and then wouldn't pull at all - over the course of one day.

Simply fixed as follows:

1 - Diagnostic - With the controllever adjusted to the lowest thumb position, pull the mower backward and engage the smart drive lever slowly. If the smart drive doesn't stop (brake) the mower before the lver us straight down, the cable is too loose.

2 - Solution for loose cable - loosen lock nut (against adjustment sleeve (near the hinge on the mower handle)), and loosen (lengthen) the adjuster until the diagnostic above shows the cable is not too loose. Tighten the lock nut against the adjustment sleeve.

Celebrate! unless this loose cable thing was not your problem ;)
