Honda mower won't start

HONDA HARMONY II HRR216 EASY START.......won't start...was almost out of gas, and it threw a big puff of black smoke out and quit. refilled and it will not start in any throttle position. PLEASE HELP.

The only thing I could think of would be....

• Need to clean air filter.
• Make sure spark plug is "good".
• Make sure there is good compression.
