Honda mower model year?

Is there an easy way to tell the model year from the serial number or model number.

YEs,
you take a photo of it, then go to your friendly dealer and ask or sent an email to Honda
AFAIK there is no date code as such

So there is no easy way. MTD at lest codes it into the serial number so you can figure it out easily.
