Honda HRX217 Rebuild Help!

I'm installing a new crankshaft and seals on my newly acquired HRX217 lawnmower , I got the old crankshaft off and removed the gear off of the bottom of the crankshaft before I realized it had a match mark on the bottom of the gear. There doesn't appear to be a corresponding match mark on the crankshaft. The engine is a GSV-190 and the lawnmower specs are: HRX 217 TDA, MAGA-1059045 & GJAAA-1189462. If someone has info or a diagram for this please respond. See pictures.

Didn't the new crankshaft come with a new set of gears? I recently replaced a crankshaft in a GCV160, and the new set ups come with plastic gears that slip onto the crankshaft with a tab that mates up with a notch in the crankshaft. I had to order the crankshaft specific to the engine I was putting it into.

Earlier GCV190 (all HRX mowers use GCV190s; the GSV is only use on the commercial HRC model) came with a press-on metal timing gear. Later production engines have a removable plastic timing gear. When replacing the crankshaft, you can order just a crank and put on your old plastic gear, or the kit, which includes the crank and a new plastic gear. The plastic gear is keyed to a recessed hole in the new-style crank.

Bottom line? You really can't install an old metal gear onto a new crank. You should get a new-style crank kit with the plastic gear and use it.

Part number for the new-style crank kit is 06131-Z8D-W50, list $30.77

Looks like I'll have to order the newer crankshaft anyway, the throws on the crankshaft are larger and don't install right. So if the part no. 06131-Z8D-W50 is the new cranshaft, I'll go ahead and order it. BTW the part no. that I first ordered is 06131-Z8D-W00.

I ended up finding the plastic gear in the bottom of the box mixed in with the packing, also the new crankshaft fit fine, got everything back together and it runs great. See pics:

Here's some more pics, I installed a valve cover that goes on the GSV-190 engines , it requires a gasket instead of a sealant, the new valve cover is cast aluminum alloy instead of stamped aluminum. Also a note on the new bolts, The ones I ordered were M6 x 25mm and the two bolts that fit the bottom of the valve cover had to be cut from 25mm to 22mm because the two bottom holes in the block were not drilled completely through and the bolts bottomed out before securing the cover . So here is some pics after install:

Great job. It's very satisfying to put one of these engines back together and have it run like it should.

I put that valve cover on a GCV160 I rebuilt this summer. It's not only more robust than the original, and a whole lot better with the gasket than sealant, it looks awesome too. I've got another GCV160 sitting on the bench that I'll eventually add that valve cover to, and the air cleaner cover with the pre-filter in it as well.

I think you saved me. I did not realize that the gear was in the box with the shaft and might have thrown it out. Glad I read this post before I started.
