Hi guys, I am from New Zealand and i have owned a honda hru216d lawnmower for 2 years. JUst recently mower started having problem with mulching, it does not mulch grass into fine pieces as it used to, blades start strugling even with short grass, sometime blades disk just sink into ground and leave a unpleasant mark. lawns looks really bad after cutting.

I have checked air filter and spark plug and have replaced new blades, and set RPM to 3500 and it still cuts bad. I took mower to a mechanic and he said mower is phisically OK, not problem was found.

What i noticed is the mower started cutting bad problem since last time i replaced blades in a local mower shop. So i was wondering if there is a possiblity the mower shop had done some tricks to my mower, causing now its irregular and bad cutting.

Anyone knows whats going on with my mower? I would really appreciate your suggetion.

Regards,

Steven

I took a look at the Honda Power Equipment site of New Zealand since that model number was so different from any of Honda's mowers here in the U.S. You have some very impressive features that we don't see here. I like the blade and height adjustment systems in particular.

Thinking about how you describe the problem you're having, are all the blades and components under the deck properly installed and torqued up?

Sounds like the blades are on upside down to me. The way those mulching blades have a curve on the ends and look like a propeller, it is easy to get them on wrong. Make sure the sharp cutting edge is down closest to the ground. Otherwise you're beating the grass down and with the mulching curvature of the blade facing the wrong way only makes it worse. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply.

HRU 216D is a similar model to HRU 216M1(not sure if i got model number right) but just without blade clutch, so basically as soon as i start engine, the blades start turning.

Yes the blades are installed in the right way, i took mower to a mower shop and they said mower are in phisically good condition are they could not figure out why its not cutting the way it should.

Another thing i found out when i was checking mower underhousing, the shaft which connects blades disk can be pulled in and out with force, just a slight movement maybe 1mm. Is this normal for a Honda mower?

Thanks,

Steven

It used to be a great mower and doing a really good finish with lawns, i certainlly do not want to lose it.

Thanks,

Steven

There will be a bit of play in the Power Take Off end of the engine. Not much, and 1mm doesn't sound out of line at all.

Might try giving Honda Customer Service there in NZ a call/email.

They might have some tips, or at lease be able to refer you to an authorized dealer who is familiar with that model and can probably figure out what is really wrong.

Got any photos of the underside of the mower you can share?

From the small image in the brochure, looks like the blade might be in two pieces??

Thank you. That's what I thought.

Thanks. It's night time here in Auckland. I will post up a pic of mower underside tomorrow

Just send a email to Honda NZ, hop they can Get back to me with some good news.

Most Small engine Mechanic here in NZ are being lazy and irresponsible. What they did just visually checking the mower and come out with a conclusion the mower is fine. I asked them to have a go with mower on lawns and they saw clamping on lawns and still tell me mower are all right I was just being fussy with its performance. Come on i have been using this mower for two years I know it should have cut much better. Guess they can only help a mower with air filter cleaning, spark plug cleaning kind of things
