The cable that runs down to the tranny and connects to the user engage bar is disconnected. The cable end is about 4" from where it attachs to the user bar. I've tried several things to pull the cable up and connect to the bar but can't budge it. I'm afraid if I put to much force on the cable connection eye that I will break it. The cable doesn't seem to be rusted but became disconnected the last time I used.

Any ideas on what I can do? Is there anyway to get a diagram of how all this fits together?

I'm not the mechanic here, so hopefully either robert@honda will respond to your post tomorrow and give you a diagram, or a mechanic on the site like Rivets.
(Make sure you check back to see who responds.....some new people ask a question and then never check for answers).
Again, WELCOME! And good luck!

I will get you details tomorrow when I can access service materials. Thanks. For including the serial number; it makes it easier

Caveat: I work for Homda but the preceding was my opinion alone

jackmanjls:

Your mower is part of the first (what we call K0) production run of that model, FYI.

There is a shift cable and clutch cable that connect to the transmission. Sure sounds like the clutch cable has failed or come way out of adjustment. The K0 models also had a service bulletin regarding a weak weld on the clutch lever. I'll attach the bulletin to this post so you can review and inspect your mower.

I'm going to also include the pages from the shop manual for cable replacement and adjustment. Should you need a new clutch cable, it's Honda P/N 54510-VE2-305 ($15.62) and available from any Honda dealer; here' a link to find one in your area:

Rob@Honda, tx for your response.
I have an idea on how this all fits together after reading what you sent.
I will be working on this sometime next late next week...business gets in the way.
I'll keep you posted on how this turns out.
