Honda 217 HRX not starting

So my wife and I have had a lawn care guy for the past two years while I was working pretty much non stop. I have taken a step back from working as much and now doing lawn care meself. I stored my lawn mower in the garage for the past years and took it out this past weekend to inspect it. Engine would not start after several pulls even with fresh gas.
Live in MS as well so not like we get super cold winters. Mind helping me pinpoint what could be the problem? Clean the carburetor or new spark plug?

Adjust intake & exhaust valves with engine cold. Inspect air & fuel filters for replacement. Check oil level on dipstick, add if low.

Locate your engine above using serial number from mower deck & locate inline fuel filter at gas tank, you may want to replace filter.

I'd start with the basics. Start by checking to see the gas line isn't turned off. If that's OK, replace the spark plug and air filter if you didn't do that before storage. I'm wondering if you stored the mower properly which could cause carb problems.

It was stored in our garage for that time. Also carb reservoir bowl was really clean. Like looked brand new. Bought a spark plug today so will replace it in the morning and get back

strip the carburettor fully i bet it is gummed up and has a very distinct smell of stale fuel, maybe quicker and easier to remove and clean fuel tank / hoses then replace the carburettor with a genuine one (i wouldnt waste money on cheap Chinese copies) and i reckon it will fire straight up.
