My riding Craftsman lawn mower just made a loud Bang blew black smoke out of the engine and now will not start

Is there oil on the ground? Gas in the tank? Might be an ignition coil gone bad. Could be several things. What does it do on a restart?

And exactly what was happening at the time ?Going sideway along a hill, up hill , down hill, mowing 10' tall grass slowly , racing over short grass cutting off 1/2"
