Help me figure out what is going on

This is a B&S 21HP Intek engine on a 54" zero turn mower. The problem started today. Up until today I have had no problem with the engine and have mowed my 1 acre yard several times this year. Today the problem started and it is a weird problem. My yard slopes downhill, not real steep, but a noticeable slope. Starting today I had no problem when mowing in a downhill direction but when mowing back uphill the engine sputtered, backfired, and would die altogether if I didn't disengage the blades. Without the blades engaged it ran just fine going uphill. I thought it may have been a dirty fuel filter so I purchased a new one and installed it. That didn't help. It seems to me that, when the mower is traveling uphill, the governor is not working properly. I get this idea because without a load on the engine it runs just fine.

SO, does anyone out there have any ideas as to what is going on? BTY this engine is only 3 years old.

check the oil level is right up to the top.
The oil safety switch can end up out of the oil an cut the spark to the engine.

A small amount of water in the float bowl can sit there without a problem on the flat , then become a problem when tilted.
