Engine Runs too Fast

I'm a new member and an acknowledged novice at mower maintenance and repair. Recently I replaced the diaphram (fuel pump) on my son's walk-behind Rolens mower which has a 4.5 hp Briggs engine. It wouldn't run at all before but now runs at an extremely high speed. I suspect that it is a governor problem but I don't know much about how the governor works so I wondered if someone out there could give me some advice.

Hello & WELCOME to this LMF...

There is a spring that tries to hold the throttle wide open... and a governor that tries to move it the other way, closed....
Check that you do not have any linkage binding or disconnected.. :smile:KennyV

PS... This is a handy link to governor operation & set up... : http://www.briggsandstratton.com/engines/support/frequently-asked-questions/Governor System/

Thanks for your help! I took a look at the linkage and spring and found that the assembly was incorrectly installed and the spring was pulling in the same direction instead of opposing the governor as it should have. It worked perfectly when I changed the direction of the spring pull.
