Hard to start

I am working on a Kohler SH,6 1/2 HP motor that is hard to pull when it comes up against compression.

Have you checked and/or tried adjusting the valve clearances.

No but that is next on my list. It almost comes up solid but you can pull it through and then it turns easy until the next time it comes up "really" hard.
