Not sure how they recommend doing it but I find that it is safer to lift the mower if you do not lock the parking brake when lifting or lowering. I always park on a level surface though. When you lift the mower it rolls forward very slightly and when you lower it it rolls backward slightly. If you have the parking brake locked there is a possibility I think of causing the jack to be under stress.

Exactly how I did it. Once up, I lock brake. Unlock to let down. I does allow the mower to roll slightly when raising and lowering.
