I have the GCV160 engine and I’m trying to resolve a surging issue (may have it solved) and an auto choke issue. I want to replace the carb but I’m finding some conflicting part numbers for it. According to the Honda parts site using my engine model and serial number I need 16100-z8b-901 but I have 16100-z8b-003 on the engine now and it looks like it has no connection to the auto choke. Any information on this is greatly appreciated.

Besides just the model and serial you must use the spec alpha/nurmeric number to get the correct IPL.

Thank you for responding. Where can I find that?

Generally it is in the same area as the serial number. Example below.

StarTech, the only other thing I found was S3B* after the model/serial stamp. I don’t mean to pester you with this but I’m trying to repair this for someone that really needs it.

Your not being a pest. I know I have to nitpick the info but there is a reason as I got the verify the correct carburetor PN.

You have either a GCV160LA0 S3B or GCV160LA1 S3B but both of these S3B type uses the 16100-Z8B-901 carburetor and not the 16100-Z8B-003 that you have on the engine now.

You are correct, I have the GCV160LA0 S3B. I know I’ll need to replace the thermowax cylinder because it’s leaking. I’ll go ahead and get the 901 carb kit. Thanks for your help, StarTech!

Yes indeed. I was a regular on a Mustang forum and I try to be as helpful as I can to anyone willing to try and take on a repair themselves. Many times other members just reply with “use the search” or something worse. Folks just want some help and that’s what I got here! Thanks again!

Just a quick update: the replacement carb and thermal switch arrived and were installed. I fixed some damage to the governor control arm and did the idle adjustment procedure. Now the mower starts with one pull and idles perfectly. I have no idea how the wrong carburetor wound up on that engine but the condition of the blade (what was left of it) is a good indication of how the previous owner treated it.
