Governor Part For Older Briggs Engine

The one in the picture is a combination linkage rod with the spring integrated with it. You can buy just the spring. Any governor return spring that is the same length will work.
Just curious...do these springs have varying tensions depending on the thickness of the wire? The small piece that was hanging on the governor control lever was very thin wire.

Yes, the thinner the wire, the lighter the spring tension. Hope you find an oem spring, but if you don’t, suggest you try a generic governor return spring from Amazon or Ebay. The spring just returns the throttle to full open when the governor stops pushing the linkage to close the throttle. It doesn’t take a lot of pressure, but notice how much it gets flexed when the engine is running. The governor linkage is constantly in motion and eventually that very thin wire gives out.

I will look end of next week and others are correct you can order just the spring for Honda’s off Amazon that are very similar and I believe can be modified to work. I saw these when I searched for your part number and description online.

I lucked out, as my local power equipment guy had a suitable replacement. I’m back in business. Thanks again for the kind offer.
 
So, I installed the new spring and the throttle now increases and decreases engine rpm properly. I am sensing by ear that the max throttle setting may now be over-revving the engine, but I do not have a device to check rpm. I don't want to spend a lot on this, so do you guys have any suggestions for a cost-effective and accurate rpm gauge? I've seen cheap ones that wrap a wire around the spark plug wire and another that uses oscillation (old school technique).

I am also wondering if installing the new spring would cause higher rpms at max throttle due to the spring being tighter.

I use a non-contact Tachometer that uses a small piece of reflective tape. Works great on small engines. I got one that also has the mechanical tach portion for shafts and things like that.

Depends on what you want to spend but for under $30 you can get this one with several different adapters for measuring RPM. There are even cheaper ones too.

I have an Extech 461895 which is expensive when new at $339!! But you can find them used on EBay like I did and they run about $40-$60.

One very interesting thing I found is every mower I checked was running slow compared to the factory HP ratings. I usually need to increase the RPM's 100-250 rpm to get them up to full speed.
