Goats -- Untiring and Uncomplaining Lawn Mowers

Hi guys! I ran across this news in Yahoo. You might find this interesting:

Is this true? Are there really goats mowing the grass in rich homes in USA? Very interesting.

This can be the green mowing solution. Some people in this forum look for green lawn mower. This is what they are looking for :thumbsup:

I don't think you are going to find lawns trimmed using goats...

Heavily weeded areas, especially hard to get to spaces... yes.
I live in a mostly rural area and it is very common to find goats used to clear over grown spaces. But they are generally borrowed :wink::biggrin:...
I'm sure this will work in a more urban area, but as shown in the clip you will have to make a temporary fence & tend the goats....:smile:KennyV

I have a goat, he eats the grass in our back yard where we cannot get to easily. He is a family pet as well as a lawnmower. Perhaps they should change it so goat is a type of "mower"

What type of climate do goats need? Would a goat be most practical in an area with short winters? A friend of mine has chickens and they are trouble enough - I can't imagine trying to keep a goat happy through a snowy winter!

I am not sure if we use goats in Korea. But in the North, they use goats . . .

Goats live in cold and warm places in the planet. They eat grass a lot. That is why it is good to bring them to places with tall grass you want to cut.

I have considered goats and my research has revealed a downside, goats will eat any plant they can reach. They can climb fences and as Kennyv points out, they fertilize. So if you have dogs like I do they will roll in the goat waste as any dog will tell you "it smells to good to resist". Male goats or buck as they are referred to, can become a problem, as they are randy (google it). this condition can produced a terrific odor and a nasty disposition.
All this of course can vary depending on which variety of goat you have, but your best bet is a small one of the female gender, one that is edible in case things don't work out, you have a barbecue scenario:eek:

Goat manure is fantastic as a fertilizer, I grow some very nice things with only goat manure as the fertilizer, it is natural and organic.

AND like your picture shows... They can be just that obstinate AND more...
They are cute to look at but ... like an elephant, I like to see them now and again, but would not like tending after one...:laughing:

As RobertBrown has said they can smell a little funky at times...

Lots of fun BUT I think I will stay with diesel machines... :smile:KennyV

Goats are great food. I have tasted it. I also think goat meat is clean. They eat grass only. If we use goats we let them stay only in parts where there is nothing that we do not want them to touch.

Just thinking . . . if grass is very tall (after your six months vacation ^_^) then maybe goats are a good idea before mowing the grass.
