Gasoline shut off valve?

The anti-backfire valve is not a "shutoff" valve as some people believe. It is only there to assist for quicker shutdown and prevent fuel from being sucked into the engine after the ignition is turned off.

From the sound of your situation, starting it on a regular basis while stored may not be a good option, due to having to tote a battery for some distance and then fumbling with connections in the cold.

If you have electrical power where you are storing it, a battery maintainer might be a good option.

I do have electricity where the battery is stored...in the basement. I put the trickle charger on it once a month. I need to get one of those float chargers for it.

Hello H.,

For the past few years, I have been using solar panel chargers to maintain most of my batteries. They have saved me having to buy new batteries practically every year. I just leave them connected and secure them to the machines

As long as the electrolyte is kept active in a conventional lead acid wet cell battery, they last for quite a few years beyond normal expectations. My equipment gets used off and on most of the year, so I don't hardly store anything for long down here in South TX.

For my portable 15KW Generac generator connected to my house, I use a NOCO Genius 2A charger/ maintainer and it has not let me down going on 5 years with the same battery.

Install the shutoff valve and run the engine til it quits from lack of fuel. Drain Float bowl as some always remains. Done.
 
If you install a shut off valve, make sure it's a quality one. These little black and red ones are divided. Ones with a flow indicator molded into it are junk. Good ones do not care which direction they are installed. You can see this if you take a directional one and connect it to the gas line. It will flow in both directions, but less in one. The good ones flow the same, and much more, in either direction. 'Taryl Fixes All' has a good video on this. I've had a lot of leaky and reduced flow cheap ones and do not use any more.

I just put one on my Cub Cadet. I run ethanol free gas but my reason was for winter storage and I put it in front of the fuel filter so it makes it much less messier when I change the fuel filter.
