I want a new gas cap because I suspect there is something going on with the venting in it. The mower won't start unless I take the cap off. I tried cleaning but I just want a new one to make sure I eliminate this.
What I don't know is can I get any cap or do I have to get the same one?
This is on a really old Tecumseh TMV125 by the way.
As far as I know, any vented cap with the same diameter and thread size will work. Most all are standard that I have seen of which I have only experienced two sizes, either the small ones on push type mowers or the large ones on the riders. Now if they incorporate a gauge in the top of the cap they have different gauge lengths according to the depth of the tank.
Any reputable repair shop can get one for you. Aftermarket caps are available as replacements as Tec is "gone out of business". Take your old one in so they can match it.

Ethanol is damaging gas caps on all machines .
You should just get another cap.
The tiny pin holes for air exchanged have closed up due to the break down of gasoline ethanol .... It kinda melts the plastic

I bought a Honda branded gas cap at Wally World that fit my Lawn Boy, 'bout 5 bucks.

A dealer near me has a box on the counter of assorted used caps for $3 each.
