It is okay to add a fuel shut-off valve to an engine with a fuel pump? I have a Cub Cadet zero-turn mower with a Kohler 7000 series engine. It's my understanding that this engine has a fuel pump. Will that be a problem if I install a fuel shut-off valve? Does the philosophy of running the carburetor dry for extended periods of down time still apply?

You can add a shutoff to an engine with a fuel pump.. Not a problem. And leaving the carb dry is still good philosophy. I recommend adding something like Startron or other fuel stabilizer prior to shutdown and to help prevent the little bit of fuel left in the carb going bad while setting. I am not a fan of the Stabil products but there are other better products on the market.

I leave fuel in all my gear. Had to put new fuel lines and such nearly ever year in something. They dry out internally and externally stored in the garage over winter. Cracks and such set in.

Started using Stabil year round. Never a fuel slash hose problem again. Starts on 1-3 pulls in early spring.

People leaving OPE outside in the elements probably have a worse time with this. Works for me anyway. Some don't like Stabil.
