Fuel pump?

John Deere rider with 19.5 HP B&S model 31P677 just stopped running today. Same thing happened a few weeks ago, fuel filter was stopped up, replaced filter, everything seemed fine until today. Mower stopped and there is very little gas in the filter - maybe 5-10 drops. Time to replace fuel pump? Replace fuel filter again?

Thanks

Flush fuel tank. Tank needs to be SPOTLESS like a new one. Gas cap needs some form of seal to keep grit out. All new fuel lines and filter. Entire fuel system needs either replaced or cleaned. Tank vent needs inspected. Pull hose AT carb. Should be solid stream of gas. No good stream, find out why and correct it.

Inspect your fuel can. Do you have the new or old style can? New cans are terrible but they do keep the cans interior cleaner and the fuel fresher. If you have an old one with no cap at all, all you are doing is allowing water and grit in. Where does the grit go? Right back into your engine.

It sounds like the fuel pump might be the issue if there’s very little gas getting to the filter, especially after you recently replaced the filter. Before replacing the pump, check for any blockages in the fuel line and ensure the fuel tank cap vent is clear, as a clogged vent can cause similar problems. If everything seems clear, it’s likely time to replace the fuel pump. A quick check of the fuel filter again wouldn’t hurt, but it seems the pump is the more likely culprit.
