I own an old craftsmen lawn mower that I'am trying to repair. it is a vector Tecumseh engine model 917.377591. I need to know the proper way the flywheel key is installed. the key number is 611154. did an extensive search on the net, with no result. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Been awhile since I looked at that keep, but if I remember correctly the part that fits in the crankshaft has a rounded part to it, and that should face toward the engine. I think if you get it put in the crankshaft wrong, the flywheel won't fit correctly over the key.

I guess I don't know what you have here. Any key I have installed will only go in one way and if not it shouldn't matter which way it goes? Did someone put a steel key in this engine and do a lot of damage?

hi and thanks for your reply. if I understand correctly, the rounded(half moon) should face towards the crankshaft groove. is that correct? should the flat end of the key be on top?

Doesn't the crankshaft match the key? If not you have the wrong key or there is a problem. Some of these engines take a flat key.

no, the proper aluminum key was installed. the part number is 611154(correction). its a real funny looking key. if you google that part number you'll see what I mean.

Yes I do see what you mean. Never came across a key like that but sure someone has. The Tecumseh keys I have do have the same step yours have but aren't tapered like yours.
