Hi guys i've "maybe" had a little change of thought on the whole situation. I found a local Toro grandstand 36 mower at a local dealer with a 5 year warranty for $5,500. I know they have 0% financing but not sure the term length. Plan to talk to them on Monday and get more details. Of course it comes with free delivery and 50% off the first service. They said it was a demo unit and has 214 hours on it. Id prefer a 30ish size deck for the size of my yard and hopefully it won't take up a lot space (important) compared to a 42 z-turn. Sounds probably like it "might" be a better option. I'm going to get in contact with them Monday. Not sure if price is negotiable but it would be nice if i could pick it up for $5,000.

Oh by the way i timed how long it takes me to mow my yard today (that includes trim & edging) and it takes 2hrs 30 minutes.

Ric is a big fan of the grandstand. I believe he uses one in his business. A stand on mower would get in and out of tight areas easier than just about any other mower. It's a lot of money for a small lawn like yours, but it will last forever. If it is in your budget then it would be a fine choice imo.

The Grandstand is probably the most productive mower you can buy and you should be able to cut your time in half if your using a 21" push mower. What I would ask and look for before buying the Grandstand is what year is it? What size engine? It should have the FS 541 Kawasaki, if it doesn't don't go over 3K, I wouldn't offer over 3K for the unit anyway and for $5500 it better not have a variable speed control either. New there pricing at $7495 and you should be able to buy it for $6800 out the door so $5500 isn't that great a price. I would assume he is selling the unit as New/ Demo if there going to finance the unit at 0% for 42 months?

Hi Ric, and thanks for the reply. You seem to know quite a bit about this specific mower. To be honest i don't know the answers to the questions just what they had posted on the craiglist ad. Here is the post:
Toro Grandstand Mower Demo Full 5 Year Warranty 36" deck214 hours

..not sure what can gather from the pics.

I wasn't sure if most of these places haggle on price or not. I guess i was suprised it still had a full 5 year warranty. If $5,500 is way to night can you give me a fair price to offer? Not so crazy as they would never accept it but fair enough price that i wouldn't be giving to much. Ok one thing you've noted is i don't want a variable speed control. What type of control do i want? Anything else i should be looking for. Thanks a bunch for all your help....

Edit: Ya i definitely see what your saying now on the price. Here is an ad in my area for a scag vrider (i'm assuming is comparable to the grandstand) for less hours for $5000:
2 SCAG Vrider Mowers. Course i don't know if i get a tranferable warranty and i don't get financing.

I'm a bit bias but the Toro is a lot better mower. The Toro Grandstand that your looking at IMO is way over priced. It Has 214 hrs and for a Demo that's a lot of hours. I've had mine for just over three years and used it commercially and have 660 hrs. My GS has the variable speed control and they stopped using them on the machine the very next year of production.

The real problem as I see it and this is just my opinion but if your going to finance, Toro uses either Synchrony or Sheffield and I don't think and I may be wrong but there not going to finance a Demo at 0% If they finance they will probably hit you with either 1.99% for 48 months and according to there chart your payment will be $147.56 or if they do go 0% it will be a 42 month at $130.90 that's on the 5500 and don't let the guy screw you because if he is selling this machine and getting new finance Toro should knock $500 off the top of his $5500.

Now with that said considering the mower cost $7495 new and Toro is giving $500 off that price and the dealer should give you a couple of hundred discount you should be able to walk out the door for around $6800 which would put you at 161.84 for a new mower that would last you for ever. Personally I'd have a real problem buying used when for a few dollars more a month I could buy new and not have the worries.

With 214 hrs your already half way to the Hydro oil change and that's not cheap and it's not all covered under warranty either. You don't know when the engine oil has been changed or if it ever has been changed or fuel, air and oil filters have been changed or not.

You can do what you want but that's how I'd approach it but as far as the mower goes you wont buy a better mower than the Grandstand. It's a full 7ga deck 9 and 3/8 inch spindles and all sealed bearings. It has the lowest center of gravity of any stander that I know of and will handle hills and grades without any problems. Just be warned  there is is a learning curve.

Definitely an option i'm considering. I called today and they told me something happened with the ad where the info was incorrect. He said the unit only has 90 hours on it. He also told me its a 2011 model. I don't if know if this makes it any more attractive but i might go look at it Wednesday.

Are we talking about the Toro Grandstand in the ad you posted if so this sounds a bit fishy to me. Number one if it's a 2011 and he is asking 5500 he is way out of line and the photo clearly showed the time on the mower and it said 211.4 hrs. If it's a four year old mower I seriously doubt anyone will finance the thing and he should be asking $3000 tops and you should be able to buy the thing for around $2500. I'd really be concerned about the warranty because it's used and Toro probably wont honor it for another 5 yrs.

The op can purchase a riding mower for $2k that will last 10 to 15 years and save $6k over that time. Which makes more fiscal sense?

If everyone thought that way there would not be many lawn crews on business.

Luckily there are a lot of people in the world who are either physically unable to mow their own lawn, or too lazy to do it themselves.
