This is my first (full time) year. I have 5000 postcards ready to be sent out. Business cards. T shirts. Trailer and a truck. What mower should I buy? I have one already but I want another one. Any tips for a rookie?

What is the average size of lawns you mow? Also, what is your budget?

Just average suburban houses. I would like to spend around $1000 or less

Ok, so average subruban house probably like 20-25 minutes of mowing and 5-10 of trimmming.

So, you could get a very good walkbehind for 1000$ that will be commercial grade. I have a YBravo 21". No very known, but very good! Bulletproof tranny, extremely fast in second gear, very good at mulching and bagging, one of the bests to mow in very wet grass, it has real tires, ball bearing wheels and the lits goes on! It is also lighter than the other commercial mower outhere. Other very good models would be the Ex-Mark Z-series 21"or Honda HRX. They can be acquired for about 1000$.

Yes, good suggestions. Most commercial 21" mowers will run around $1,200, which is what I think the Exmark X-Series 21" is in our area, but the Honda HRX is only $700. It is technically considered a "premium residential" mower, but I have used it commercially with no problems. Do you already have a trimmer and blower?

Look on Craigslist for good deals in your area. Used mowers, trimmer and blower is how I started out my first year. Saved up enough to buy some new equipment this year. And it depends on your how many customers you have. Don't spend so much (like 10,000) if you don't have the yards to make it back.

Get a gas blower, it will save you a lot of time!
Husky 150BT, STIHL BG86 or something ECHO handheld will do the job cleaning the poperties and at a good price also.

Are we talking like a 36 or 48" walk behind or a 21" self propelled push mower? I wondered because you said you had 5000 postcards ready to be sent out.

I hate to say this but if you're only using a 21" and want another for back up I wouldn't be sending out 5000 postcards because your far from being equipped to handle the response you may get, you or your business could end up with a bad Reputation. You would be better off just taking on a few clients and using the money to build on the equipment you need for the business then worry about your client base.
