engine rpms waaaaay too high...governer issue?

my rear engined mower, is revving at 1/4 throttle what it SHOULD rev at full throttle,i think something may be wrong with my governor, i figured this out when i went to cut grass and i turned the engine on, then i went to cut the grass, i slowly moved it up and i went to half throttle and it was revving REALLY high, so i just moved the throttle to what it should be if it was working properly, but i still think it was reviving to high because it drank a little less than a gallon of gas after cutting for 45 min, and the exaughst was orange, what do y'all think is happening??

hello>?

Lean running means it is getting way too much air to the gas ratio.
so do i need to adjust the carb?

I don't have a clue what mower engine you have.
i can't get the numbers now, but its a 12.5 hp engine

ok.....i didn't have time today, i got couple of 1 timers today ( people who ask you to do there yard, but there probably only gonna let you do it once because maybe there mower is broken, they are hurt and they can't do it etc. )
and I've done 1 of my yards today, 2 one timers, and gave this guy a "proposal" on his yard, and then my family and i went to the grandparents of both sides and gave them some food, toilet paper water, etc. because they couldn't go out and get it.

so yeah my days been pretty full, and i won't be able to do it tomorrow either because were going to my familys land to go shooting some targets and clay pigeons all day......

Now I know you trying to be. A Jack of all Trades and the Master of None. Stick one or the other but don't try to do both or more at the same time. Don't have too many irons in the fire at the same time.

Second with you being 13 yrs old I pretty well can bet you don't have a business license, collect and pay sales taxes, or pay self employment income taxes. And you should have at least liabiltiy insurance since you have no idea of what you are doing; just guessing at things.

It called work so family things have to be put aside in order to get it done. Here I put in over 60 hrs a week doing the small engine repairs and don't have time for socializing. The only day I get to myself is Sundays and that is fill with getting groceries, household items, and doing the work around the home. The business has 15 mowers in the shop at various stages of repairs and it is challenge to keep what is being done to each and all the various part orders all awhile working the incoming customers.

StarTech said what I have said many times you are just guessing. Remember we have been around the block more than once and can tell when people don’t have a clue what they are talking about. You’ve show your inexperience many times by what and how you post, so it is easy to see your age and knowledge. I have told you more than once “Don’t assume you know what’s happening “. I’ll add this one which I would use in my classroom, “Engage brain first, then open mouth, in that order”.

alright guys, bad news and good news

bad news, we couldn't go shooting today because turns out they didn't have any shells.......wtf. and we can't get any at bass pro or something because there is a 10 person rule at a time, and the lines are hella long.

good news, i can work on my mower, speaking of that i went out earlier and tested to say if i had a leak on the manifold, and i didn't have a leak, so what next?

First go online and find info on how different governor systems work. Read it carefully many times until you understand each style. Second, open the Briggs manual and read the section on governors until you understand how this system works and can be adjusted. Skip the videos until you have done steps 1 & 2, they won’t help you much until you have a good solid base to start with. If you don’t want to do this, you can continue to show your inexperience and continue to guess at a solution.

don't worry, I'm not lazy like that, i will do exactly what you say. thank you rivets :)

and also, I'm sorry for all the arguments me and you have had in the past, and now i understand/see how ignorant and how much of an a$$hole i was, and i wanna apologize, and i hope i never have bad blood with you, and i hope we have a good friendship for now on.
thank you

and following what 7394 said about it might be getting to much air, wouldn't that air issue most likely be due to wrong carb adjustment?

Did you read and understand post #19, sure doesn’t look like you meant it, just words. You asked what do I do next and I told you what to do. Now you don’t follow what I said and go in a different direction.

no no....i think you're taking what i said the wrong way, what i meant was 7394 was talking about air, and leaking issues, and you are talking about gov issues.
believe me, I've still been doing what you said

so, since you guys are talking about different things, there is probably 2 things causing this, the gov and more air getting into it.
so i wasnt going in a different direction, i was just asking a question on the 2nd probable issue

#20

logert gogert

logert gogert

I've found the issue on my mower guys! ..........i think............
i believe my governor on my engine style is the lever style, that is outside of the engine, and what was wrong was it wasn't connected to the spring, and it was open the whole time.
so when i got on the throttle, since the gov was open, it would just rev willy nilly.

just to make sure that was the case, i hooked the spring back up, and started it up, and whala! it revs just fine!

#21

R

Rivets

Ok, I guess I can’t count, first you asked what to do and I said get to know your governor system and stick to one thing. You told me that is what you will do. Second, the very next post you talk about having the wrong carb, because you couldn’t find an air leak as suggested earlier. How is that sticking to one thing, I count two. I must be too old to understand the new math. Finally you just showed us how little you know as it took you 4 days to find a missing governor spring. If you wouldn’t ASSUME you know how things work, but actually did, you would have found the problem last Wednesday. I said the ball is in your court, but it seems you can’t get into the game.

#22

StarTech

What gets me is that he says it is governor spring that lowers the rpm when all governor systems that I know of the spring increases the rpm.

Rivets you got to remember 1 + 1 does equal 2 or more. I have heard of rare cases where it equals 8.

Yes Star you are correct, my understanding of arithmetic is fading due to my age. He’s probably out following social distancing rules by doing one timers, as you do them once and never get close again. Oh by the way I’ve still got that one kid on the BBQ spit, only getting tougher, any ideas on how to tenderize them.

My lord if he been on there all this time you are making jerky or shoe leather. I always brine my kids so have more mositure while roasting them or they will dry out too much.

#25

Well the main problem with this one is they keep jumping around. I can’t control them no matter which method I try. Maybe I should get really upset with them and stick a fork in them and call it done. Being an instructor I can’t do that, so I guess I’ll try turning up the heat.

Finally you just showed us how little you know as it took you 4 days to find a missing governor spring.
well, technically it did take 4 days, but that dosent mean i was trying to find the issue for 4 days, i was actually only out there for 2 days, and also, people make small mistakes like what i did, some people forget to put gas in the tank then try to wonder and take 2 hrs trying to fix it when all it needs is gas in the tank, and some people try to fix an issue on why there mower starter won't spin and the reason for that could be something simple like there foot wasn't on the brake

but this time for ME my issue was something simple like a loose gov spring........oops, people make small mistakes like that all the time.

Yelp and what a joy and nightmare at the same if it ever all at once. If it ever happens to you, I hope you have one heck of a good job as money will be going out the door by the truck loads, many sleepless nights for years. Then it becomes 8 , 9, or possibly 10 or more in couple years or more.

Logan, you want the members to take you seriously and respect your questions and replies. Your signature and replies show you are just a young kid and you don’t really deserve any respect. If you want to be a valuable and responsible member here you need to grow up and act like one. If you don’t we will constantly be replying to any of your posts which we deem irresponsible, stupid or could get someone hurt. I have told you more than once to never ASSUME you know something until you can prove it and ENGAGE your brain before opening your mouth. You don’t seem to understand either of these and disregard these common sense rules. When you finally understand and follow them you may gain the respect you want. As a 13 year old kid, if you continue to disregard them, with signatures like I’m an idiot and I can do what I want, if you don’t like it too bad, will only show you have not got the basic knowledge to be a valuable member here. As I said the ball is in your count, now you have to decide what to do with it.

Personally I tagging him with the ignore button as he is an irritate than I can ignore. Anyway I off to the non grocery, grocery store. Hope I can find weekly groceries this time around. I am out spuds. Last Sunday the store was out after some idiot had a whole shopping cart full, Another had a half basket full of bananas. They were still panic buying.

Not a bean or loaf of bread in site. A least I know how make and bake bread; although, it takes several hours to get the yeast bread ready for baking.

Long week, 60 hrs. Glad to have today off.

I may soon do the same, but it scares me that he might post a something that could get someone hurt or cost them big money. If he doesn’t grow up and I see that happening, I might have t talk to admin about banning him. He’s already cost us two good techs with his stupid posts and I’m not going to let it happen again.

As an Administrator or Moderator we can't ignore users but we do have tools at our disposal to deal with them. I know as I am an administrator for another website and had to kick off several members the last several years. I had one user that didn't know I was the administrator (My account isn't identified as Admin, it done intentionaly so I have better peer to peer discussions) to cuss me out and the user was already on a six month probation. I terminated his account right on the spot.

I’ve tried both bad cop, good cop with him, but he has no clue. Going to let him clean up his act or I’ll do what I have to. I’m not a Mod. but been here since 2012. Did you find potatoes? TP and hand soap are nonexistent here. Better half says Amazon should come through this week, I hope so or Montgomery Wards will have to do.

Sorry I have been asleep for the last 4 hrs. Boy I need that extra rest.Still yawning so I may just lay back down.

Yelp 1 sack was all that was left @ 8 am. I going to try Tuesday senior hour. They had a small bin of three week old corned beef briskets that was reduced priced. I picked a couple small ones since I am by myself. I was going to freeze one for later but they put a limit on them. I told them they just could keep them even @ half price it wasn't worth being insulted. I still got 2-3/4 rolls of Scott 1000 TP rolls so I good for several weeks. Pretty well stock on soaps being a mechanic kinda required necessity but I am only have a half box of washing soda on hand so no electrolysis just my clothes until things improve. Now I could convert the large box baking soda if necessary.

Just can't find 7 mil Nitrile rubber gloves for work. I reckon I am going back old school using a lot GoJo of hand cleaner. At least I got 2 1/2 bottles of it. Just cutting up a lot of my old T shirts for grease rags since no paper towels to be found.

Mentioning work I am getting very busy now. Even with all the riders I work out this I still got 10 units in the shop with more coming in Monday. Boy my credit card is getting a work out. Seems like I am ordering every other day now. The problem is the suppliers are delaying shipments now. At least I got a fairly good inventory on hand.

I wish I could cut my yard but it is too wet with standing water. I already got a customer's mower stuck 3X Wednesday. The weeds are already a foot tall.
