Engine Problem

I have a couple of hedge trimmers which I can't start. They've been sitting for a while over the winter. The starting cords are very stiff to pull. I've checked a carburettor which seems ok, likewise the spark plug. With the spark plug out the starter cord became very easy to pull so it seems to me there's a blockage of some kind. Where is it and what can I do about it?

You probably have gum around the big ends or excessive carbon build up on the top of the piston.
Pull the exhaust off and have a look.
Fill the crank up with WD 40, Kroll or similar. DO NOT USE CARB CLEANER .
Holding the flywheel rock back & forth to clean out the crd. remove the spark plug and spin the engine to clean it out of the crank case.
