So, I have a lawnboy walk behind mower that has a kohler engine, the elc. start works and fires the mower up right away but sometimes makes a grinding noise. It seems the gear isn't dropping fast enough after starting the engine and the teeth for the solenoid gear are grinding with the flywheel teeth. I was wondering if there's any fixes or if I need to buy a new starter solenoid. I've heard a lot of these mowers will make this noise, so please give any feedback that may help. Thank you!

You can try putting a couple drops of a light lubricant where the shaft comes out of the motor. Be careful not to get lube on the clutch under the pinion gear (that engages the flywheel).

Replace the Bendix gear on the starter. Teryl fixes all has a video on it. He has some hokie comical skits, but he knows his small engines.
