The beginning, dys 4500 that calls for a 24hp intek engine. It has a 17.5 engine on it. Mind you this is a craigslist $150 deal. ( i bought it hoping the deck would match another mower I have). on flat ground it mows and pushes along just fine. Now the real issue uphill is terrible. not enough power to shove the mower and a 200 pound human up. the other uphill issue is stalling like a lack of fuel. the lower the tank the worse it is. Please let me know if there is a good inexpensive place to obtain an engine 24hp intek. thanks all.

I am going to say you have other problems.

The 17hp should be plenty of power to carry you up a hill.
The only time you should notice the hp difference is cutting tall thick or wet grass.

Maybe the engine is just not running at max hp or torque.

Im going to say yes. Im sure there are more problems. at the end of the day Im wondering if its a gearing issue and why does it stall up hill? if you point the nose down hill it restarts. opinions are awesome but im more looking for a possibly intelligent answer.

To get a intelligent answer you first must ask a intelligent question.

There are many things that could cause the engine to stall going up hill.

First post the engine model numbers so we know what engine you are talking about.

Second we are here to help for free and can not read your mind or guess what you are talking about.

Third give more info. Like how steep is the hill?

Does it stall when the gas tank is full?

Has it always done this or did it just start?

Without all the info we ask for we can only give you a opinion.

It has nothing to do with the gears ( this is a fact )

The 17hp engine will run that mower just fine. ( also a fact )

Possible causes. To low on gas, fuel filter clogged, fuel line rotting?
Carb is dirty, carb float and or needle not working properly.

The engine is a 17.5 intek briggs and stratton. (i can get the model number when I get home)

Its good to hear its not "gearing". (an old man said with the lack of horse power that could an issue. I wasnt sure so I figured I would ask experts)

the hills when it starts breaking up are 10- 20 degrees. It will lose power and eventually stall in 100-150 ft. anything above 20 it stalls in 50 ft tops

I always keep the tank full due to the stalling. I found it stalls less with a full tank.

Thanks for your help all...

Ok what it is doing is putting the carb higher then the gas tank.

I am assuming it is a gravity feed. No fuel pump.

If you like the mower strap a tank on top of the hood.
