drive belt slap

Craftsman model 917.28856. My drive belt slaps the brake pedal linkage and makes a terrible racket. The mower is still under warrenty and I had the tech replace the belt that came on the mower with a new one, at first the sound was gone but when I cut the grass the first time with this new belt the slapping came back. The tech said he had never encountered this problem???
Has anyone else had this problem and was it resolved. Any suggestions ?

I'm thinking the tension spring is week or wrong one and it not holding the belt tight when you use the mower and the belt is not griping the pulley enough because the belt is loose. Or just adjust the belt a little tighter if there is a adjustment on the belt tension. :licking:

According to the tech it has no adjustments so it must be a manufacturing defect.
I guess I'll call sears again.

Hi just my two cents but I had a 2009 craftsman mower where the bolts that hold the rear from shifting in a vertical direction came out and the rear twisted. They gave me a brand new motor due to the factor defect

I'm trying to diagnose a similar problem, Craftsman 917.28924. I believe it's the mower belt, and the noise sounds like a constant twanging a spring against sheet metal, or like sheet metal to sheet metal rattle on an old pickup. The noise presents when the blades are engaging uncut grass; no noise if (1) motion only engaged or (2) blade engaged, but sitting on cut grass. In other words, only when stress on the blades. I have guessed: a. belt stretched b. engagement spring stretched c. blades a little dull -- or all three! Did you figure out what the problem was? I can't find any other similar references. It's annoying.
