Hi all!

I have a Murray 38608x12c rider and I've been looking on line for an owners manual. Any suggestions? My drive belt broke and for the life of me I can't figure out how to install a new one. It looks like I need to drop the transaxle to get the belt around the rear pulley? Any help would be appreciated!!

Murrays weren't usually too bad, and I never had to drop the rear end. Usually just push the clutch pedal in and lock, drop the deck belt out of the way, loop the drive belt over the top pulley, then fish it back up and over the trans pulley, and rotate the pulley to snap them past the belt keepers. You
probably will have to loosen the nut holding the idler pulley, to get the belt in that keeper, then when together, tighten the belt up by unlocking the pedal and visually follow the belt all the way around to ensure that it is on correctly and not rubbing on the wrong side of a keeper.

If you took the whole deck off, it would be easier.

Thanks Fish! I was thinking the same thing about dropping the deck, but after looking at it, there is a gear running through the rear pulley (sorry for my ignorance here as I'm not very mechanically inclined - but is that called the drive pulley?). So would dropping the deck solve the issue of threading the belt around that rear pulley?

A gear running through the rear pulley? Are you talking about the splined shaft that the rear pulley sits on?

I think so. Sorry again for my ignorance about these machines.

No problem, it would be # 23 on the blowup I put up, the loop in the belt on the far right would be going around the pulley on the engine, which is not shown here.

Push the brake/clutch pedal all of the way down, and pull up the parking brake lever so that the pedal stays down........

Ahhhhh.......OK, so once the parking brake is engaged then I should be able to get the belt around #23 and through to the front?

Fish.......Thank you for all your help!! That diagram was what I needed!! I was finally able to get the belt on last night but alas, they sold me the wrong belt!!! It's a good three inches shy of the front pulley. But now I know how to do it and will get the correct belt soon. So again thanks!!!
