Drive Belt Problem

Have a LTX1040 2009 13AX90AR056. Replaced drive belt 954-0266A with an MTD belt. Starts off fine but after pressing the break, belt slips on the engine pulley causing whining noise and smoke. Belt seems to be too tight. Have also noticed that you don't have to push the gas pedal for it to move forward. Do belts loosen after installed? Any suggestions?

Smoked belt makes a bad lunchtime meal.... Hard to digest and expensive too.

Firstly the belt must go slack when you brake otherwise you doing the same as putting on foot on the brake while the other is on the gas.
There are adjustments for the brake & the drive under the mower.
You will need to drop the deck, get the mower in the air and get underneath.
Have some one work the controls ( engine running ) and watch the belts.
If the drive has been adjusted to compensate for wear ( as would be done in my workshop during a routine service ) the it will need to be backed off after fitting new belts.
