It won't crank over, just hear a buzz sound when I turn the key to start. We can jump it off from another battery and it starts and runs fine, just won't crank on its own. Any advice? Thanks very much.

Call me crazy but your battery might be no good.

Also, check all your electrical cnnections, particularly the grounds. If a new battery does not do the job, I would suspect a starter is going bad.

Hi, Check there is enough charge in the battery. 12v is required to start the engine. Are you starting it off the other battery directly by bypassing the solenoid? If so then it could be an issue with the solenoid.

Thanks all. This is my son's machine. Will have him check everything. There was no exterior corrosion on the terminals, however I know there can be hidden corrosion.
GardenMechanic, I don't suppose we were bypassing the solenoid, we didn't disconnect anything, just jumped it from the truck battery.

Re: DR FieldBrush Mower won't crank update

I checked both battery terminals..they were clean, but I cleaned them anyway. When I turn the key to crank, a round thing on top of the starter/solenoid spins, but the flywheel/engine does not turn. We can jump start the engine and it will run fine. A new battery was put in about two years back. Maybe bad battery anyway? Any advice? Thanks

Your lucky to get a year out of the batteries these days.

That round thing on the starter is the bendix. If it spins, but does not engage the flywheel, then that bendix needs to be replaced.

But he said it starts with a jump so you would think the bendix would be ok?

Normally a weak battery will cause the bendix to spin out and then jam into the flywheel gear. He said just spins. Yes it could be a bad battery also, but I sure would be replacing that bendix first. He will have to anyway in the near future.
