DIY mulch plug idea

I routinely acquire free non-functioning push mowers. A lot (most) are baggers, and are missing the mulch plug. I mow frequently, so I eventually learned about mulching, which is good because I rarely fertilize. So I mulch mostly, and occasionally bag just to switch it up. I had an idea (it’s entirely possible I seen it somewhere and forgot I seen it) to fashion a mulch plug from something like expanding foam. Maybe use painters tape on the tunnel to avoid sticking and what-not, and also find something to contour the foam to the deck contour. Just wondering if anyone has tried anything similar or has any input yay or nay. Thanks.

Foam will fall apart without an abrasion resistant front piece
A lump of tyre tread that a truck has shed on the interstate is about perfect
