Dixie propane won't start

I've got key ordered. Part number I found was 082774 (4x19D) Thanks to all for help. I will advise outcome.

Hello ILENGINE,

Is there any such a thing as an offset flywheel key on a small engine?

The Generac (B&S copycat) style engines only used regular flywheel keys.

I have only rarely seen an offset key used in camshaft timing on older V-8 racing engines.
Yes, was very common on Tecumseh engines.

Specific questions:

Can you tell us what led you to check the flywheel key? Was there a blade strike of some kind?

Were the plugs put in after the last run or before? What brand and where did you get them?

Has the mower completely dried out or is it still in a damp area?

Do you have an inductive timing light available to use?

Have you verified there is no moisture in the cylinders?

1. I was getting spark, fuel, and compression. Thought timing issue.
2. New Champion from Rock Auto that is done every spring.
3. Yes. Mower was moved to garage and no sign that their was any water intrusion from storm.
4. No timing light
5. Not sure of cylinder condition, but will use compressed air to clean.

Flywheel is off right now waiting on new key. I can't find anywhere on the net that specifies an offset key, and replacement number is regular half moon. Key that was removed (pic above) looks like ones that can be purchased, however, I can't find anything that that engine requires one when burning propane.

Hello G.,

Unfortunately, someone without the design or working knowledge of this engine introduced a fallacy about having and "offset" key for the flywheel.

Even with the key partially sheared you will still have spark; it's just not happening at the correct time for the combustion stroke

Sadly, progress goes off the rails when doubt is introduced into the diagnostic and repair process.

Gee! And people think "AI" is the only entity that provides wrong answers.

Here is a link to purchase a repair manual for this engine:

LP (LIQUID PROPANE) - FUEL SYSTEM Proper service and repair is important to the safe and reliable operation of all gaseous fueled engines. Any servicing or testing of a gaseous fueled engine must only be performed by qualified personnel. Always follow applicable installation and service procedures. An example of these requirements is found in NFPA-58 for liquid propane. These are US Federal standards. Worldwide standards vary. Local, city, and state requirements may also have certain requirements that must be observed.LP (Liquid Propane) is a gaseous fuel and when stored under pressure, becomes a liquid. Although a vapor forms at the top of the tank, this particular system uses a liquid withdrawal method, drawing from the bottom of the tank. This is accomplished with a special valve that is installed on a normal propane cylinder with a tube that is attached to the valve and extends to the bottom of the storage tank. Because of pressure in the tank, liquid propane is forced through the tube when the valve is opened. The LP system starts with a pressure relief valve to prevent excessive pressure from building in the system during shutdown. This is followed by a 12 volt (normally closed) electric solenoid, which prevents the flow of LP when the ignition key is off. Fuel should not flow to the regulator until oil pressure closes the contacts in the oil pressure switch. The LP vaporizer regulator converts liquid propane to a vapor. The vaporizer uses engine or drive system oil to provide heat to aid in the evaporation process. The regulator controls the vapor supply to an amount required by the engine. The engine’s intake vacuum draws Vaporized LP into the carburetor on an on-demand need. When the engine is off, the LP no longer flows from the regulator to the engine

Success !!!! Made a call to Generac who put me in touch with Dixie Chopper. A tech there told me that their Generac engines used only half moon woodruff keys not off set. I replaced key with item number recommended in parts catalog (G082774) and it started instantly. Thanks to everyone for ideas and help.

Just for record Generac has supplied engines for Dixie Chopper mowers for quite a few years.

When reconditioned my fire damaged Generac 15KW generator with a 990cc engine, I found a used cooling fan and a few other things I needed on eBay. They all came from a Dixie Chopper with the same gas engine.
