This will seem like a really stupid question for the experts out there, but here goes. The dipstick in my lawn tractor has "low and full" marks stamped into the stick. However, I can't see the level because the oil is so clear. I don't want to use tape because it may come off and fall into the engine. I tried paint, but of course that wiped off when I tried to check the level. I tried permanent marker, same result.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

wipe the dipstick, pull it out and as soon as you pull it out, lay it horizontal so you can see where the oil drops off. Otherwise, let the engine run for a little bit and it will be easier to see, as long as you at least have oil on the stick (wouldn't want to burn up the engine.)

i have had difficulties in the past to read clean oil sticks mainly the twisted ones. but right after the oil change make sure you have the correct amount of oil and just keep 'tilting' the stick to get the right amount of light at the right angle. maybe a flashlight would throw a different kind of light on the oil stick.

Is the stick plastic or metal? Light colored or dark? Flat or round? I ask those because it's hard to tell you how to properly mark it...

You can always score it lightly with a small triangular file whether it is metal or plastic. And, this may sound stupid, but you could try slipping a soda straw or vinyl or rubber tube (make sure these are a snug fit) over the end before you check the oil level. I have sometimes had trouble seeing the oil level mark after just changing the oil on a mower or tractor, but in bright sunlite or with a strong flashlite you should be able to see the wetness on the stick.

right after i change oil i just take the stick out hold it horizontal and lay it on a clean paper towel and don't move it. the towel will tell you where the oil is.
i check it everyday i use it, i'm paranoid about hearing the 27 hp kawaski seize up.

The method I use, is to slowly run my fingertip down the stick and stop when I feel the oil.

I can't see it on my dipstick either, because the Synthetic oil I use is almost 100% clear when it is on the dipstick.

Put a small square piece of wood on your key chain. Mark it with a scratch for the full, add, and end of the stick. Place the stick end on the lowest mark, press gently.

I use Tn Dave's method also. A blot onto a paper towel tells me what I need to know. I usually line up the end of the stick with the edge of the paper towel so I know where I started.

If your stick is metal you can darken it with gun blue... oil will show up then.
OR just do as benski and Tn Dave suggested... That never fails and you need the paper towel to wipe things off anyway... :smile:KennyV
