Dip stick tube O-ring

The O-ring on the B&S Quantum engine comes with an Orange colored o-ring. I have found Metric o-rings made of Viton that seem to fit well in place of it when it no longer works. In my experience Orange is typically silicon. Silicon is used in high temps. I am assuming it may be Silicon. Viton has excellent properties for use with oils. It is rated up to 240 C. Higher for short term temps.

Does anyone see a problem with using a standard metric viton o ring in place of the OEM "Orange" Oring of unknown material? Do you have a substitute you can find at a hardware store.
 
Viton will be just fine. You are correct that Orange/Rust is Silicone. Silicone provides a little more flexibility at low temperature, so I'd guess they spec it for cold weather (snow blower) applications. I would not sweat it and would not give it a second thought.
 
The type of o-ring determines how long it lives. On most of my equipment that o-ring out lives everything else on the engine. Silcone, Viton, NBR, EPDM, all work well. Black, green, red, brown - any color. They just live different length lives in different environments.
 
cool. Thanks for all of the feed back. I just found a NBR one that fits a bit tighter. I am going with that one. The Temp rating is about 248 F for continuous use. this is on the back end of the engine. The Orange ones seem to last 20 years plus before they start leaking or break from brittleness. If I get 10 yrs out of the NBR that is fine.
