I cut at 3 inches, but half the time it is out of necessity because the grass gets so tall!

Cutting height is dependent on the type of grass you are cutting and the climatic conditions in your area. In central Florida we have several types of grass and each looks and lives best under different cutting heights. St. Augustine Floratam and Zoysia do best when cut at 3.75" to 4.00". Bahia has to be cut at 2.5" because it bends under the blade at higher settings and looks like crap. Bermuda grass can be cut at any height, but, if too short it looks brown after mowing.
Here in North Central Oklahome we have primarily 2 types of grass: Bermuda and Fescue. I have been cutting the Bermuda at 1 1/2 to 2 inches. The Fescue is cut at 3 1/2 to 4 inches.
