Hi. Picked up an XT1 LT50 and it came with a snowblower attachment but the po said he thought it needed a gearbox. So I am assuming that it's a worn brass worm gear? I could be wrong. Never messed with one. But I guess the only way to tell is to put it on the tractor and see what happens, right?

Anyway, I'm putting together a potential parts list and the oil for the gear box is 15.99. And it only requires 4oz. Is there a substitute? Can I use the same oil I use in the transaxle? 15w50 or 5w50 synthetic, whichever it is. Or something else?

See attached.

On those gearboxes I normally use 80W-90 oil, but that is just me. Never had a problem. Read my signature.

Ok. Thanks. I just made this video. Looks like worm shaft is snapped in half.

Came across another site that says the 737-3120 oil is 5W40 synthetic.

Would 5w50 be ok?

Ever replace a worm shaft before? About to order parts.

If IL says he’s found a site which recommends 5W40 synthetic, I would follow his advice. If you can find the parts, repairing is not difficult, patience is your friend.

I just ordered the worm shaft, 4 seals, key way from Cub Cadet. Will ship in 8-10 days. Was $168 all together. I ordered the worm gear on Amazon for $13.

All fixed. Was easy. I used some 80w90 I had since you said you'd never had a problem with it. Said on the bottle that it was safe for brass too.
