I apologize if this is in the wrong section of the forum. The machine is a homeowner grade Cub Cadet branded CC4175 power head for a string trimmer & several other accessories. I think MTD made it. The unit is from 2007. Each year, I use it about 10 or so hours maximum. It is stored without fuel, run until stall and stored with valves closed. Oil changed annually.
Today, I noticed a few drips of oil in random spots on the pavement. After removing the engine covers, I could not find any specific place from which the oil leaked. Most of the inside of the covers had a light oil coating, so I assume leaked oil sprays around.
I torqued the screws for anything I could find fuel or engine related (carburetor attachment, rocker cover, etc.) None were terribly loose, but none were all the way tight either.
One thing I did notice was that the foam air cleaner element was soaked with oil to the point of dripping. Since I was this far in, I decided to check the valve clearance. It is to be 0.005". (Tolerance 0.003 to 0.006")
They were both 0.012" I adjusted them to 0.0095"
Is it possible that the valves being out of adjustment could be the reason that the oil filter got oil soaked, or should I be looking elsewhere for the source of the oil?
