Cub Cadet PTO problems

This will likely sound so rudimentary as to expose me as a dunce. 2008 Cub Cadet i1042 Zero-turn riding mower. How bad is it to engage the PTO with the mower deck removed? Every time I engaged the PTO the mower conked out. The belt did not seem to have slipped from the pulleys and it had worked fine for ages. I dropped the mower deck and could find no obvious issues. I wondered if the PTO shaft was properly spinning so I engaged it. Bad idea. Now it appears to be stuck in that mode, I've broken a wire harness and now I'm stumped. Beyond calling uncle and taking it in to the shop, is there any obvious way to disengage it? I've got a thick skin so don't be afraid to tell me how dumb I've been. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like removed the anti rotation device which allows the electric to spin freely ripping out the control wires. First you must repair the wiring harness for the clutch and install the anti rotation device. This prevents the clutch housing from rotating while the clutch brake is applied. which is applied when the clutch is not receiving electrical current.

It does appear that the clutch has a removable connector housing and hopefully the wire are not chewed up. If they are not chewed up then all you need is a couple new F56 terminals that properly installed.

The anti rotation device you mentioned...could that be the belt keeper rod? Referring to the schematic I can see no other part or device that might perform the role of preventing rotation. Since I didn't have a belt in play I figured the belt keeper was superfluous...dopey me. One bit of luck, the wiring harness appears to have simply disconnected from the connector and is in reasonable shape. However, the wire colors are a mystery. The harness from the PTO has one black and one red while the exit from the connector has one white and one blue (with white stripe). I can find no wiring diagrams that depict the proper routing so any guesses you might have would be certainly better than mine. When the temperature comes up a bit this morning I'll be on my back again reassembling.

Yes the belt keeper at the PTO is also the anti rotation device.

White and Blue/White wires. The white is ground and the blue/white is +12v. And Red should be the +12V side of the clutch with Black being ground.

It appears that the original dilemma was a slipping belt likely due to a loose belt keeper. With your advice all is well and I've even managed to pick up the last of the fall leaves before Sunday's forecast snowstorm. I'm eternally grateful to you and all who can return a numbskull like me to the proper path. Have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving from us here in Utah.
