Cub Cadet LTX 1040 Brake and Gas Pedals move together

I didn't start having this problem until I started using the parking brake so I presume that it's somehow connected to that (or cruise control). I've had my cub cadet for a couple of years and it runs like a champ. After running a dozen trailer loads of dirt around the yard I started to use the parking brake so that I could get out of the seat, dump, and drive out for more dirt pickup. Then came the dual action pedals. Press the brake and the gas pedal moves forward. I used to be able to get them apart by kicking the brake pedal or mashing it hard at the same time as the gas pedal. But now I can't start the mower now until it becomes independent of the gas pedal again.

Presumably the brake cable is somehow affected by either the parking brake or the cruise control. Where do I start to correct this and how can I keep it from occurring again? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Both pedals may be mounted to the same pivot rod under the mower. if they are getting rusty and sticky they may be turning the rod instead of turning on the rod. When the rod turns, it moves both pedals.

may need to get underneath and look at the pivot point, and possibly lube it to get them freed up.

On mine the brake and drive pedals have always been together. This is the way mtd drives work. It should not start without the brake pedal all the way down.
As you push the drive pedal down the brake should come up a little.
By pushing both down as hard as you can at the same time is not good for it at all.
Not sure if yours has the info center dash but it will light up and tell you why it will not start

Mine have never worked together. The engine wouldn't start if the brake pedal wasn't pushed all the way forward and the gas pedal disengaged. Like I said, this just started and I first noticed it when I tried to set the parking brake. I'd push the brake in then pull down on the parking brake lever normally but this time the gas pedal went forward (and the tractor lurched forward) when I pushed the brake pedal. Not only would the parking brake not set but once I turned the engine off it would go back on unless the brake was the only pedal depressed.

We had a similar incident with a 3 year old Cub Cadet LTX 1040.

Has anybody else seen this problem ?

Hello,
I recently encountered the same issue after using the parking brake. I found the 5/16" Clevis Pin was loose (right side of mower below the gas pedal). After searching the parts manual, looks like a bow-tie cotter pin is missing. To free up the brake pedal from moving the gas pedal, I just pulled the clevis pin as far back as possible, and this removed the interference.
Then I was able to fully seat the pin thru the first bracket's slotted hole and then by pushing the brake pedal down slightly and pushing on the pin it fully inserted into a second bracket hole (not sure what it is but it moves with brake pedal). The clevis pin is now snug with some tension on it, but I'm sure it will loosen up again after driving it for a bit.
I have ordered a bow-tie cotter pin (p/n 714-04040) that I found in the parts manual. Install does not look to bad, seems to be a little access from underneath towards the front of the mower.
